Mr. Tawfique Nawaz

Tawfique Nawaz is an Oxbridge educated Senior Advocate of the Bangladesh Supreme Court and Head of the internationally reputed law firm, Juris Counsel. Mr. Nawaz is also a member of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB)’s Board of Trustees.

Khondokar Mahmud Hasan is a jurist, and was also the former chief justice of Bangladesh. He had a chequered career spanning more than 40 years in the legal profession including being a former International Associate of the American Bar Association, former part time lecturer of law, Dhaka University and a former member of the Bangladesh Bar Council. Mr. Fakhruddin Ahmed

Fakhruddin Ahmed was born in 1931. He obtained M.A in International Relations from Dhaka University in 1952 and joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1954. From 1957-71 he served in different capacities at the Pakistan Diplomatic Missions in Jeddah, New York, Tehran, Accra and at the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad. Following independence of Bangladesh, he was appointed Additional Foreign Secretary in January 1973. He served as Foreign Secretary from October 1974 to November 1975. He served as Ambassador of Bangladesh to Italy (1976-77), to Yugoslavia (1978-1982) and as High Commissioner for Bangladesh to the United Kingdom (1982-1986). He was again appointed as Foreign Secretary (1986-1987) and at the end of the term he formally retired from service. Mr. Wali-ur-Rahman

Director (1998-2010)

Waliur Rahman, a diplomat, essayist, critic and translator, was born in Jessore, Bangladesh in 1942. Mr. Rahman enjoyed a fellowship to the Trinity College, Oxford in 1974-75. Mr.Rahman had the rare privilege of piloting the admission of Bangladesh to the World health Organization (WHO), the first United Nations Agency to admit the newly independent country Bangladesh as a member in May 1972. At that time he was the first Permanent Observer to the European Office of the United Nations in Geneva where he also witnessed the admission of Bangladesh to such UN Agencies as ILO, WMO, UPU, FAO, GATT, UNCTAD, IAEA and UNIDO. Since then, Mr. Rahman has been deeply involved in the work of the International Organizations particularly that of the United Nations. He was director, in charge of political, legal and information department in the organization of the Islamic Conference for the year 1978. Mr. Rahman represented his country in various international conferences including the 34th session of the UNGA and 37th session of the UNGA. Mr. Rahman represents the Council of Namibia delegation to the Law of the Sea as a delegate. He was promoted to the rank of Ambassador in 1982. Dr. Shahdeen Malik

Honorary Director (2010- 2019)

Dr. Malik studied law in Moscow (LL.M., Patrice Lumumba University, 1979), Philadelphia (LL.M., University of Pennsylvania Law School, 1984) and London (Ph.D., School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, 1994).

He started his career as a Lecturer in the Department of Law at University of Dhaka in 1980. In the mid-1990s he moved in the NGO sector (Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust, BLAST). Although Dr. Malik, has been spending most of his time as an Advocate of the Supreme Court from 2003, he served BRAC University as the founder Director and Professor of School of Law till 2015.He is now an adjunct faculty of University of Asia Pacific.

Over the years, Dr. Malik has worked as a short-term consultant for a number of UN Agencies (UNDP, ILO, UNICEF) and other bilateral and multilateral development partners (The Asia Foundation, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, Canadian International Development Agency, and others.)

He is also a member of the governing boards of other leading civil society organisations (e.g. Action Aid Bangladesh, Refugee and Migratory Movement Research Unit, Centre for Policy Dialogue etc.) and is currently an Independent Director of Pubali Bank Ltd.

Dr. Malik authored the book titled The Children Act, 1974: A Critical Commentary (Save the Children, 2004) and co-authored the book titled Public Interest Litigation in South Asia: Rights in Search of Remedies (Dhaka University Press 1997). He has contributed book chapters in edited books and a myriad of articles in the law journals of a number of countries such as Bangladesh, Germany, India, USA, and the Netherlands. He also writes regular columns for the country’s largest newspaper, Prothom Alo, and participates in national and international conferences.
